It’s World Kindness Day, Here’s How You Can Participate
Have you been kind today?
What Is World Kindness Day?
World kindness day or, WKD, is an international observance on 13 November, introduced by the World Kindness Movement in 1998. This holiday is observed in countries all over the world, including the US, Canada, China and Japan.
Kindness is defined as, “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate”. While no one is asking you to set up a tree in today’s honor or to donate a million dollars to charity, all today’s asks is that you simply go throughout the rest of your day with the intention of preforming an act of kindness.
What’s The Point?
Here at Gesture, along with our mission to spread a more thoughtful culture, with our company but also our regular installments of The Thoughtful Project. We constantly practice the idea of just being kind to one another on the day to day. But, what does being kind to each other actually mean?
Well for starters, being kind to one another does not always mean what you think it does. Of course, the standard keeping up with your standard “please, and thanks you” when ever possible is a good way to be kind, but there are so many other ways you can bring a bit of kindness into the world around you.
Think about how you interact with people everyday. When you are walking into a building, are you holding the door open for the person behind you? Are you catching the elevator doors before they closes in someone’s face? Maybe you’re just pushing your chair in once you’ve gotten up. All of these acts, though may seem like simple little things, are actually major ways you are spreading a more thoughtful culture.
Let’s look back on how those acts might have changed someone’s day. You held that door open for the person behind you, in turn, they didn’t have to struggle with their bags. Maybe you saw someone rushing towards the elevator doors, because you stopped them from closing, they weren’t late for their big interview. Remember that chair you pushed in? You simultaneously reminded those around you to push in their chairs when they got up, and saved someone 10 minutes at the end of their closing shift.
A More Thoughtful Culture.
Though the scenarios mentioned before are made up, you can absolutely recall a moment in your life where you or someone you know have preformed one of the mentioned acts of kindness.
World kindness day, is a great reminder of how your seemingly small actions, really create a major ripple effect into the world around you. Something as simple as holding a door open, or giving out a rose to a stranger can change how we all see the things we do, and how we effect the people in the world around us.
