As they say, team work makes the dream work, right? Though you can’t actually have a “dream team” without good communication.
Communication within a team means way more than just emailing, or catching up on your weekly reports. There are a multitude of layers to communication that really create positive change. Luckily for you, we went through all of the layers and found the 6 communication “layers” we think you should be implementing on your teams.
Have An Open Door Policy
If you haven’t already implemented this into your day to day office life, then today is the day to start. Metaphorically and physically having an open door, allows your team the opportunity to feel like they can come to you with any issue or questions they may have.
It also relieves any uncertainty they may have regarding if you are a person they can approach in their times of need at work. Opening up the flow of conversation takes away any old preconceived notions that anyone who is in a position of leadership doesn’t care to listen to those following behind them.
Constantly Ask For Feedback From Your Team
As mentioned before, making sure you have an open door policy allows your team members to feel like they can come to you with any concerns they may have. One of those concerns can actually be you, or more specifically how they felt you handled a situation.
Ask your team members to give you feed back on how they felt you handled your team meetings that day. Or ask them if there is some area they feel like you could personally improve on when it comes to the day to day in the office. This analysis can help you and your team come to an understanding of where things can be improved with over all management. Or even help clear up something they did not understand during your process.
Be Clear On Assigned Roles And Tasks
Nothing is more confusing to a team than a lack of role understanding. It doesn’t matter if your company has been up and running for 10 years, or if you are plowing through the start up life. Your team members need clarity on why they are on the team and what their daily, weekly, monthly and over all tasks are.
An easy way for you to keep track of who is doing what is to go department by department.
Team of writers, ensure they know what topics they are writing about and where they are posting.
Team of data annalists, make sure they know which information they need to be tracking and for who it’s for.
If anyone is still confused on their roles, then the open door policy and any potential feed back on your clarity, can help you ensure that in the future there is little to no confusion.
Identify Your Team Leaders And Support Them

A leader without a strong support system will eventually fall, this is something you’d probably want to avoid. Those that are delegated into a management role, need support not only from those on their team but also from those who are their leaders.
Having daily or weekly meetings with your team leaders helps them distinguish their needs from themselves and their teams. It not only instills a great communication skill for the future, but also helps bring up their self confidence as a leader in the process.
Give Company Breaks & Lunches A Purpose
Though lunch can be an escape from work for some, we’d like to suggest you make lunches an opportunistic moment for those on your team. Hold events or presentations during lunch breaks that your team would be excited to jump in and participate.

Diversify Your Communication Platforms
It’s 2019, this means you’re bound to have people who do not work in the office 24/7. Being a remote worker is becoming more of the norm, and this means you need to make sure that you are equipped to handle it. This means that even though your office is in NYC and they are in San Fran, they should feel like they are 100% part of the team.
